Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa (2020)

Anwar is a private investigator for a small detective agency in rural Bengal, sent out to spy on unfaithful spouses and follow strange leads. He is good at watching people but bad at living: haunted by the woman he loved and lost, he drifts through his assignments in a dreamy, melancholy state, and the cases he takes on increasingly blur into his own search for meaning. Buddhadeb Dasgupta, one of the great poets of Bengali cinema, tells the story in his trademark lyrical, surreal style rather than as a conventional mystery. Made several years before its 2020 release, it pairs one of Indian art cinema's masters with Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who gives a quiet, inward performance.
