Varun and Nithya grow up as neighbours and classmates, quarrel as children, meet again in college and fall in love, then drift apart as family responsibility, career pressure and pride get in the way. Years later, with their lives about to go in separate directions for good, they get one more chance to speak honestly to each other. Gautham Vasudev Menon tells the story in chapters across the three stages of their lives, and the conflict comes from ordinary arguments and silences rather than villains. The film is best remembered for Ilaiyaraaja's soundtrack, with songs such as Kaatrai Konjam and Saindhu Saindhu, and for Samantha's performance, which won her a Filmfare award for Best Actress (Tamil). It was shot alongside a Telugu version, Yeto Vellipoyindhi Manasu, with Nani and Samantha, and Santhanam supplies the comic relief as Varun's friend.
