Bose Pandi spends his days in his village as president of the Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam, the "association of carefree young men", whose main activity is doing nothing. Then he falls for Latha, whose father Sivanandi is a hot-tempered, moustached village strongman who guards his daughters' marriages with fierce pride. Bose Pandi has to court her right under her father's nose, with his best friend Kodi helping and hindering in equal measure. Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam was Ponram's first film and a big hit that turned Sivakarthikeyan into a star. Sathyaraj's comic menace and Soori's comedy were praised, and D. Imman's songs, including Oodha Colour Ribbon, were hugely popular.
