Teen Bahuraniyan (1968)

In a close-knit middle-class joint family, a wise old father lives happily with his three sons and their wives. Then a famous film actress moves in next door, and the three daughters-in-law, eager to impress her, begin borrowing, overspending and pretending to a lifestyle the family cannot afford. Debts pile up, tempers fray and the household's peace is shaken before lessons are learned. Teen Bahuraniyan is a Hindi remake of the Tamil comedy Bama Vijayam (1967), made by the Madras studio Gemini, and it keeps the original's warm, gently satirical look at keeping up with the neighbours. Prithviraj Kapoor brings dignity to the patriarch, and the film is a pleasant family comedy with an easy moral.
