In a parched village near Chennai, where water is scarce and promises are cheap, a four-year-old girl falls into an abandoned borewell. District collector Mathivathani rushes to the site and takes charge of a rescue that exposes everything that is wrong around it: missing equipment, a fire service without the right tools, politicians more interested in the cameras, and villagers who have never been listened to. Over one long night she has to decide how far she will go against her own superiors to save one child. Aramm ("righteousness") was widely praised for its realism and its anger about everyday neglect, and Nayanthara's restrained performance as the collector won her many awards. The borewell accidents it dramatises are a real and recurring tragedy in India.
