Amar Singh Rathod (1957)

Amar Singh Rathod tells the story of Amar Singh Rathore, a seventeenth-century Rajput noble from Marwar who served at the court of Shah Jahan and became a folk hero of Rajasthan. Insulted by a courtier, he killed the man in front of the emperor himself and paid for that act of pride with his life, a tale celebrated in ballads and puppet shows ever since. This 1957 film casts Jairaj, a specialist in historical heroes, in the title role, with Nirupa Roy and an early-career Raaj Kumar in support. It is a period costume drama full of court intrigue, Rajput honour and swordplay, typical of the historical films of the 1950s.
