Naukri (1954)

Ratan has just earned his degree, and his widowed mother and ailing sister are counting on him. He moves to the city full of hope, shares a crowded lodging with other job-seekers, and goes from office to office only to be turned away. Love comes his way, but so do humiliation and the temptation to tell lies about his success. Naukri, meaning job, is a warm and gently comic social drama from Bimal Roy, made in the same period as Do Bigha Zamin, about the unemployment that faced educated young Indians in the early 1950s. Kishore Kumar shows his serious side alongside his comic charm, and Salil Chowdhury's songs include the hopeful "Chhota Sa Ghar Hoga Baadalon Ki Chhaon Mein".
