In 1954, the black-and-white educational video "Eat for Health" follows Ralph as he learns about the importance of a balanced diet through his teacher's lesson on the five food groups. Ralph initially resists joining his friends for dinner and skating, citing his lack of enjoyment in his meal, which was likely influenced by a candy bar he had eaten before. The next day, despite being invited to go skating, Ralph declines, feeling tired and unenthusiastic. The video explains the nutritional value of various food groups, associating them with fingers on a hand: cereals and breads with the thumb, butter and margarine with the index finger, milk and cheese with the middle finger, meat and eggs with the ring finger, and vegetables with the pinky. Each food group is linked to a specific health benefit, such as energy, vitamins, growth, and strong muscles. Ralph learns to incorporate a variety of foods into his diet, moving away from relying on candy and sweets as substitutes for more nutritious options. After a few months, Ralph discovers that adopting a finger-counting method for portion control led to improved health, increased energy, more enjoyable eating, and a broader social life.
