Deb Callahan became a mother at sixteen and is still only in her early thirties when her own daughter Bridget, also a young mother, fails to come home one night. The search turns up nothing, and Deb is left with grief, guilt and her infant grandson. Over the following years the film follows her as she raises the boy, goes through bad relationships and good ones, leans on and fights with her sister, and slowly grows from a reckless, impulsive woman into someone steady. American Woman is a character study more than a mystery, and it rests on Sienna Miller's widely praised performance, with Christina Hendricks as her sister and Aaron Paul as a man who enters her life. Director Jake Scott is the son of filmmaker Ridley Scott.
