Indu is an orphan and a poet with a stammer who marries Navin Sarkar, an ambitious government official who serves the powers that be. When the Emergency is declared in 1975 and forced sterilisations and slum demolitions sweep through Delhi, Indu sees the human cost first-hand, and her decision to help two children caught up in the violence sets her on a collision course with her husband and with the state. Madhur Bhandarkar's political drama is built around a strong central performance by Kirti Kulhari, with Neil Nitin Mukesh as a powerful young leader modelled on the real figures of the time. The film drew controversy and a long fight with the censor board before its release.
