Yaroslav, also known as Yaroslav: A Thousand Years Ago, is a Russian historical action film set in the early eleventh century. The young prince Yaroslav, son of Vladimir of Kiev and then ruler of Rostov, sets out with his retinue to deal with raiders who are seizing local people and selling them as slaves. His campaign takes him into the territory of pagan forest tribes and into conflict with Varangian mercenaries, and ends with the founding of the fortress-town that became Yaroslavl. The film was made to mark the city's thousandth anniversary, celebrated in 2010, and mixes legend with history in a muscular style of swordfights and ambushes. Aleksandr Ivashkevich plays the prince, and Aleksey Kravchenko, remembered from the war classic Come and See, appears in the cast.
