Anbarasu, a slick and self-centred advertising filmmaker, is stuck in Bhubaneswar after floods cancel his flight, and he has to get to Chennai for his wedding. He is forced to share the journey with Nallasivam, a disfigured, cheerful and argumentative man whose views on capitalism, labour and kindness grate on him at every step. As trains, buses and disasters bring them closer, Nallasivam's past is revealed: a street-theatre activist, a romance with a factory owner's daughter, and a life-changing accident. Anbe Sivam ("love is god") was written by Kamal Haasan, inspired in part by Planes, Trains and Automobiles. It underperformed on release but is now regarded as one of the finest Tamil films, celebrated for its humanism, humour and Kamal Haasan's performance.
