Members of a London club, bound by a pact that whoever survives inherits the shares of the dead, start dying in mysterious circumstances, each killing announced by a nursery-style rhyme. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are drawn in, and the trail leads through a gallery of suspects, among them the enigmatic Mrs. Pyke. Despite the title, this 1933 Hollywood film borrows only the name of Arthur Conan Doyle's first Holmes novel and tells a different story. Reginald Owen, who had played Watson the year before, here plays Holmes, and Anna May Wong, the first Chinese-American Hollywood star, adds glamour. The film is now in the public domain.
