Shalu is cheerful, mischievous and full of life, but Sarita, the woman who brought her up, has never shown her the warmth she gives her own daughter, the gentle Nimmi. The reason is a family secret about Shalu's birth that Sarita cannot forgive. Shalu adores her sister all the same, but when both girls fall for the same young man, Dev, Shalu faces a choice between her own happiness and the family she longs to belong to. Kundan Shah, best known for the cult comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, directs this emotional family drama. Preity Zinta's spirited performance and Rekha's stern matriarch are the film's highlights, and Nadeem-Shravan's songs were popular in their day.
