Balakrishnan is a struggling barber in a small village, honest to a fault and too proud to ask anyone for help. When the biggest film star in Tamil Nadu, Ashok Kumar, arrives to shoot a film nearby, word spreads that the star and the barber were childhood friends. Suddenly the whole village wants Balu to introduce them to the star, and his inability to get anywhere near his old friend becomes a source of humiliation. Kuselan is a remake of the Malayalam film Kadha Parayumbol and was made simultaneously in Telugu as Kathanayakudu; the same story was remade in Hindi as Billu (2009). Rajinikanth plays a version of himself, and Pasupathy carries the emotional story. The title refers to Kuchela, Lord Krishna's poor childhood friend in Hindu tradition.
