Giri is a blacksmith from a village near Tirunelveli whose whole life revolves around his younger sister. He arranges her marriage to a man in Chennai, believing city life will give her the comfort he never had. When he visits, he finds that the city is terrorised by a handful of brutal rowdies who make life miserable for ordinary families, including his sister's. Taking a hard look at what is going on, Giri quietly sets out to eliminate the gangsters one by one. The title refers to a type of sickle forged in the village of Thirupaachi. The film was director Perarasu's debut, a big hit for Vijay, and a template for the sister-sentiment mass films that followed.
