Baz Bahadur, the last independent Sultan of Malwa, is more devoted to music than to war. He hears the voice of Rupmati, a Hindu singer of great beauty, and falls in love with her, and their romance, nourished by song in the palaces of Mandu, becomes the stuff of legend. But the Mughal general Adham Khan has designs on both the kingdom and Rupmati, and the lovers' world is threatened. S. N. Tripathi directed the film and composed its music, and the song Aa Laut Ke Aaja Mere Meet, sung by Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar, became an enduring classic, along with other songs with lyrics by Bharat Vyas. Bharat Bhushan and Nirupa Roy play the lovers in this costume romance.
