Chinna Gounder is the respected young headman of his village in the Kongu region, settling disputes under the banyan tree with a fairness that has made him beloved and has also made enemies. One of his judgements ruins a greedy man who vows revenge, and his life gets entangled with Deivanai, a poor girl whose pride matches his own. Their quarrels turn into love, but the marriage faces a storm of plots and misunderstandings. Chinna Gounder was one of the biggest hits of Vijayakanth's career and a defining film of the 1990s Tamil village genre. Ilaiyaraaja's soundtrack, including "Muthumani Maalai", became hugely popular, Goundamani and Senthil provide the comedy, and the film was remade in Telugu as Chinarayudu with Venkatesh.
