Description

The legend of Shirin and Farhad, one of the great love stories of Persia, comes to the Hindi screen with Madhubala as the princess Shirin and Pradeep Kumar as Farhad, a stonecutter of genius. Their love defies the court and its powerful rivals, and Farhad is challenged to cut a passage through a mountain to win her, a task meant to break him. The 1956 film is a lavish costume romance in the style of the period, with palaces and gardens built on studio floors. It is remembered above all for Madhubala's beauty and for S. Mohinder's music, especially Lata Mangeshkar's melancholy "Guzra hua zamana aata nahin dobara", one of the best-loved songs of the fifties.
