Senguttuvan is a young man drowning in debt who joins a gang of small-time smugglers. He is offered a fortune to find the Maragatha Naanayam, an ancient emerald coin that belonged to a king named Irumborai, who placed a curse on it: anyone who touches it dies. Since no living person can help, the gang turns to the spirits of the dead, and the ghosts they recruit are as funny as they are frightening. Maragatha Naanayam mixes fantasy, horror and comedy, and became a surprise hit thanks to its inventive story and comic set pieces, especially Munishkanth and Daniel Annie Pope's scenes. It was the debut of director ARK Saravan, and Dhibu Ninan Thomas composed the music. A sequel was announced later.
