Sivaji has made a fortune as a software systems architect in the United States and returns to Tamil Nadu determined to spend it on free hospitals and education for the poor. He immediately runs into bribery, red tape and a powerful businessman, Adiseshan, who sees his plans as a threat. Stripped of almost everything, Sivaji decides to fight black money and corruption by any means, while his comic courtship of a traditional young woman, Tamilselvi, provides the lighter side. Directed by S. Shankar and produced by AVM, Sivaji was the most expensive Indian film of its time, and a phenomenon at the box office. Rajinikanth's style, including his bald "Mottai Boss" look, A. R. Rahman's songs, Sujatha's dialogue and K. V. Anand's camera all became talking points.
