Ajay is a decent young man with one terrible weakness: when he loses his temper, he becomes a near-unstoppable force and cannot hold himself back. Ajay falls in love with Sonia, the daughter of a wealthy man, and as he is drawn into a conflict with ruthless enemies, he must learn to control the fury inside him while protecting the people he loves. Ratchagan ('protector') was one of the most expensive Tamil films of its time, produced by K. T. Kunjumon, known for lavish spectacles such as Gentleman and Kadhalan. It was Nagarjuna's first major direct Tamil film and the first Tamil film of former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen, and A. R. Rahman's soundtrack, with songs such as 'Soniya Soniya' and 'Kanava Illai Kaatra', remains its strongest legacy.
