Raju is a fresh engineering graduate from Darjeeling who comes to Bombay full of dreams. With the help of Jai, a street-smart friend, and Renu, a kind secretary he falls in love with, he lands a job at a big construction company. Thanks to a stroke of luck and the attention of Sapna, the boss's glamorous daughter, he rises quickly, but as he becomes a 'gentleman', he drifts away from the honest people who helped him, and a scheme at the firm puts his integrity to the test. Aziz Mirza's gentle drama is often compared to Raj Kapoor's Shree 420, and it was one of the films that established Shah Rukh Khan as a romantic hero in his first year in films. Jatin–Lalit's songs, including 'Seene Mein Dil Hai', were popular.
