In a crowded chawl, several neighbours, struggle with money: what they earn never covers what they spend, and debts, pride and drinking keep them in trouble. Their wives, fed up, secretly start working as maids in wealthy homes to keep their households afloat, which leads to a string of comic mix-ups and a lesson about thrift, dignity and sticking together. Aamdani Atthanni Kharcha Rupaiyaa takes its title from a Hindi proverb meaning "earning half a rupee, spending a whole one". It was directed by K. Raghavendra Rao, the Telugu veteran who also made many Hindi films, and brought together Govinda, Juhi Chawla, Tabu and Jackie Shroff in a colourful ensemble comedy with a family message.
