Madhava is a simple, devout cowherd who works for a learned man's family and is fiercely loyal to them. He shares a love of music and dance with Hema, a daughter of the house, though he never dares to think of her as more than his master's child. When misfortune leaves Hema mentally broken and confined to an asylum, Madhava risks his freedom and good name to stay by her side. One of K. Viswanath's character-driven dramas rooted in classical music and dance, the film gave Chiranjeevi, then Telugu cinema's biggest action star, a rare quiet and emotional role, for which he won the Nandi Award for Best Actor. Meenakshi Seshadri plays Hema, and M. M. Keeravani composed the songs. Its Hindi version is titled Raghuveer.
