Rama has returned to Ayodhya with Sita and is crowned king, and his reign is celebrated as the perfect kingdom. But when gossip among his subjects questions Sita's purity after her captivity in Lanka, Rama, bound by his duty as king, sends her away. In the forest she finds shelter in the hermitage of the sage Valmiki, where her twin sons Lava and Kusha are born and grow up learning the story of Rama. The film retells the Uttara Kanda, the story famously filmed in Telugu as Lava Kusa (1963), in which N. T. Rama Rao played Rama; here his son Balakrishna takes the role. It was the last film of the director-writer team of Bapu and Mullapudi Venkata Ramana, with Ilaiyaraaja's devotional score, and Akkineni Nageswara Rao plays Valmiki.
