Marana Mrudangam, 'the drum of death', is based on a novel by Yandamuri Veerendranath, the bestselling writer whose stories gave Chiranjeevi several of his biggest 1980s hits. Chiranjeevi plays a tough, defiant young man who lives by his own rules and ends up locked in a battle of wits and fists with a powerful and dangerous man, with Radha and Suhasini as the two women in his life. The film reunited the star with director A. Kodandarami Reddy, his most frequent collaborator, and its songs were composed by Ilaiyaraaja. It holds a special place in Telugu film history: producer K. S. Rama Rao's credits for this film are widely remembered as the first to bill Chiranjeevi as 'Mega Star', the title that has stayed with him ever since.
