Rajamanikyam was thrown out of his stepfather's house as a boy and grew up in Bellary as a brash, unschooled cattle trader known as Bellary Raja. When his stepfather dies and leaves him the family estate, Raja arrives with his loud clothes and louder speech to find his half-brothers and half-sister wasting their lives and the family business being preyed upon by enemies. Taking charge, he sets about straightening them out with his fists and his heart. Mammootty's comic, swaggering performance, delivered in a broad Thiruvananthapuram dialect, became one of the most imitated of his career, and the film was the biggest Malayalam hit of 2005. It was the directorial debut of Anwar Rasheed, who later made Chotta Mumbai and Ustad Hotel, and it set a template for star-driven Malayalam mass entertainers.
