At twelve, Otis is a busy child actor whose earnings support his father James, a former rodeo clown and recovering alcoholic who acts as his chaperone and lives with him in a run-down motel. James can be funny and loving one minute and cruel the next, and Otis keeps working while longing for ordinary affection. Ten years later, Otis is a successful film actor in court-ordered rehab after a drunken crash, and a therapist pushes him to face what happened between them. Honey Boy is based on Shia LaBeouf's own childhood, and LaBeouf wrote the screenplay while in rehab, then played a version of his own father. It was the first fiction feature by Alma Har'el, who came from documentaries and music videos, and it won a Special Jury Award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2019. Noah Jupe and Lucas Hedges share the role of Otis.
