Ranjit Katyal is a wealthy, self-assured businessman in Kuwait City who has little time for India. On the night of 2 August 1990, Saddam Hussein's army invades, his driver is killed in front of him, and he realises that money no longer protects anyone. As thousands of Indians in Kuwait lose homes, jobs and safety, Ranjit finds himself responsible for them, negotiating with Iraqi officers, sheltering families and pressing a slow-moving bureaucracy in New Delhi, where one official begins to take up their cause. Inspired by the real evacuation of around 170,000 Indians, one of the largest civilian airlifts in history, the film was a major hit and one of Akshay Kumar's most acclaimed performances. Nimrat Kaur plays his wife, at first opposed to his involvement.
