Pepe le Moko is a famous French criminal who has escaped to Algiers and rules the maze-like Casbah, where the police cannot touch him. Inspector Slimane, patient and cunning, is content to wait, knowing that one day Pepe will be lured out. That day seems to come when Gaby, a glamorous visitor from Paris, wanders into the Casbah and stirs in Pepe a fierce longing for home and a different life. Algiers is the Hollywood remake of the French classic Pepe le Moko (1937), and it introduced Hedy Lamarr to American audiences, making her a star overnight. Charles Boyer's smouldering performance earned an Oscar nomination, and the line Come with me to the Casbah, often linked to the film, is never actually spoken in it.
