Shantanu, a young naval officer posted to Lakshadweep, falls in love with Nadira, the daughter of a stern senior officer on the islands. Their romance crosses lines of religion and rank and ends in heartbreak. Years later Shantanu comes back to the islands as a diving instructor, and his friend Zachariah, who has followed him there, slowly learns what he is really looking for. Anarkali was the directorial debut of screenwriter Sachy, who later made Ayyappanum Koshiyum. Much of it was filmed in Lakshadweep, and the turquoise lagoons and underwater scenes give it a rare look for an Indian film. Vidyasagar's songs, Biju Menon's comic warmth and Prithviraj's restrained performance made it a hit.
