Annamalai keeps cows and sells milk, and his dearest friend since childhood is Ashok, son of a wealthy hotel owner. Their friendship survives the class gap until Ashok's scheming father and his cronies poison it, and in the end Annamalai's land and home are taken from him. Humiliated, he makes a public vow to rise to the very top, and he builds a business empire that challenges the family that ruined him. Annamalai is one of Rajinikanth's biggest hits of the 1990s and the film that introduced his famous Superstar title card. Deva's music, including the opening song Vandhenda Paalkaaran, became a staple. The story was inspired by the Hindi film Khudgarz (1987).
