Bhanumathi, a city-bred woman, married her husband Prakash abroad and has a young son. When they visit his ancestral village in Rayalaseema, she discovers that his father Narasimha is a feared feudal lord caught up in endless faction killings, and that the family will not let her or her child leave. Her desperate attempt to escape with her son, helped by a small-time local man, Raju, becomes the backbone of the film. Anthahpuram is one of the most acclaimed Telugu films of the 1990s: Prakash Raj won the National Film Award (Special Jury) for his role, Soundarya won the Nandi Award for Best Actress, and the film was remade in Hindi as Shakti: The Power (2002).
