Anwar is a down-at-heel private detective working for a tiny agency in Bengal. His cases are mostly snooping on suspected affairs, and his latest assignment sends him trailing a married woman. But Anwar is a dreamer rather than a sleuth: on the road he drifts through odd encounters, strange characters and memories of the woman he once loved, and the investigation slowly turns into a journey into his own loneliness. Directed by Buddhadeb Dasgupta, the acclaimed Bengali filmmaker of Uttara and Bagh Bahadur, the film was made around 2013 (at one point titled Sniffer) but stayed unreleased until 2020. Nawazuddin Siddiqui's quietly comic, melancholy performance and the poetic, surreal touches typical of Dasgupta are the reasons to watch.
