The members of a large family return to their old village palace, intending to sell it. Almost at once strange things begin to happen: lights flicker, servants are terrified, and one of the women of the family starts behaving like someone else entirely. A level-headed relative, played by director Sundar C. himself, arrives to investigate and uncovers the tragic story of a young woman whose spirit is bound to the house and has a score to settle. Aranmanai ("Palace") mixes jump scares with broad comedy, much of it from Santhanam and Kovai Sarala, and its success started one of the most successful horror-comedy series in Tamil cinema, followed by Aranmanai 2 (2016), Aranmanai 3 (2021) and Aranmanai 4 (2024). Hansika Motwani's role is one of the most memorable of her career.
