In the 1700s, the people of a dry village in southern Tamil Nadu survive by stealing, and Komboothi is the cleverest thief among them. On one raid he meets a younger man with astonishing skill who joins his band, but the newcomer carries a secret: his own village has marked him as a sacrifice, to be killed to settle a feud with another community. As his past catches up with him, the film moves from adventure to a bleak meditation on custom, honour and the value of a single life. Aravaan is adapted from Su. Venkatesan's Sahitya Akademi Award-winning novel Kaaval Kottam, and Vasanthabalan, who made Veyil and Angaadi Theru, recreated the period with careful attention to costumes, villages and rituals. It was also the first film score of playback singer Karthik.
