For decades the sandalwood smuggler and elephant poacher Veerappan ruled the forests on the border of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, killing policemen, forest officers and informers and staying one step ahead of every search. Attahasa ("menacing laughter") tells his story from his rise to the years of the Special Task Force operation led by officer Vijay Kumar, played by Arjun, and the planning of the operation meant to finally catch him. Kishore plays Veerappan, with Vijayalakshmi as his wife Muthulakshmi. Director A. M. R. Ramesh had earlier made the Rajiv Gandhi assassination drama Kuppi, and he shot this film in Kannada and Tamil; the Tamil version is titled Vanayudham.
