Pandian, a dance choreographer, is separated from his wife Janaki, whose wealthy father never approved of the match, and a court allows him to see their young daughter only rarely. Desperate to stay close to her, he transforms himself into Avvai Shanmughi, a cheerful, bossy elderly Brahmin widow, and gets a job as the family's nanny. The disguise works too well: Janaki's father becomes smitten with the new housekeeper, and keeping the act going becomes more chaotic by the day. Inspired by the Hollywood comedy Mrs. Doubtfire, the film is a showcase for Kamal Haasan's transformation and for Crazy Mohan's dialogue. It was a major hit, and Kamal remade it in Hindi as Chachi 420 (1997).
