Babu runs a tea stall and lives on hope. He falls for an educated young woman and believes she returns his feelings, until she makes it clear that she wants a different life and a husband with prospects. Stung by the rejection, Babu sets out to prove himself and to make her see what she has thrown away, a campaign that turns into a mix of romance, comedy and battle of wills. Devathaiyai Kanden ('I saw an angel') was the directorial debut of Boopathy Pandian and an early hit for Dhanush in the boy-next-door roles that made him a star, with Karunas providing comedy and Deva's songs giving it a strong local flavour.
