Thiru is an unemployed, carefree youth who irritates his father but is full of confidence. He falls for Priya, a wealthy girl, and she returns his feelings. Her elder brother Guru, a shrewd and powerful businessman, is determined to break them up and tries everything from bribes to intimidation. Thiru answers each move with one of his own, and their rivalry becomes a battle of wits about money, pride and who can outplay whom. Thiruvilaiyaadal Aarambam was a solid hit that helped establish Dhanush as a commercial lead, with Prakash Raj in fine form as the brother. D. Imman's songs were popular, and the title nods to the classic mythological film Thiruvilaiyadal.
