Description

A beautiful young woman is married to an elderly, sick husband and arrives with him in a new neighbourhood, where she devotes herself to his care. In the house opposite, a young man falls helplessly in love with her from a distance, and his longing grows into an obsession that neither of them can speak of. Kamal Amrohi, who had made the hit Mahal, wrote and directed this restrained, poetic film soon after his marriage to Meena Kumari, who plays the wife. It failed commercially, being far from the escapist entertainment of its day, but it is valued by admirers for its mood, imagery and Jamal Sen's haunting music, including the devotional duet "Devta Tum Ho Mera Sahara".
