Shankar is a poor craftsman who lives with his devoted mother and makes toys and figures with great skill. He loves Parvati, but he is poor and given to drink, and her guardians will not let her marry him. Each time he resolves to change, debt, humiliation or heartbreak drives him back to the bottle, and he leaves the village to make something of himself, carrying the stain he cannot wash off. Daag is one of the defining tragic roles that earned Dilip Kumar the title of Tragedy King, and for it he won the very first Filmfare Award for Best Actor. Shankar-Jaikishan's songs are a big part of its appeal, especially Talat Mahmood's Ae Mere Dil Kahin Aur Chal and the sad and happy versions of Koi Nahin Mera Is Duniya Mein.
