Thottal Poo Malarum is a Tamil romantic drama made as a launch vehicle for Shakthi Vasudevan, son of director P. Vasu, in his first lead role as a young man. He is paired with Gowri Munjal, and veteran Rajkiran brings his commanding screen presence to the role of the stern elder whose authority stands between the lovers. The film follows the familiar pattern of mid-2000s Tamil youth romances: college-age love, comedy, family pride and resistance that the hero has to overcome. Yuvan Shankar Raja's songs were the most popular element of the film. It is a light, conventional entertainer best approached for its music and as a document of a director introducing his son to the screen.
