Vana Yuddham ("forest war") dramatises the story of Veerappan, the sandalwood smuggler and ivory poacher who ruled the forests on the border of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka for years, and of the Special Task Force that finally hunted him down in 2004. Kishore plays Veerappan, capturing his cunning and menace, while Arjun plays police officer K. Vijay Kumar, who led the operation. The film covers kidnappings, ambushes and the long manhunt, culminating in the operation that ended his life. Director A. M. R. Ramesh, who had earlier made a film on the Rajiv Gandhi assassination investigation, shot it simultaneously in Kannada as Attahasa. Veerappan's widow went to court over the film before its release.
