Bagavathi runs a small tea stall and has devoted his life to raising his younger brother Guna, putting him through college and dreaming of his future. Guna falls in love with the daughter of a powerful and violent man, and the romance sets off a chain of events that ends in tragedy. Grief-stricken and enraged, the peaceful Bagavathi takes on the underworld itself and rises as a ruthless force to avenge his brother. The film came early in Vijay's move from romantic and family roles towards out-and-out mass action, and helped build his image as an action hero. It also marked the screen debut of Jai, who played Guna, and features comedy from Vadivelu and songs by Deva.
