In the time of Emperor Akbar, a rule that only Tansen or those he approves may sing in the city of Agra leads to the death of young Baiju's father. The boy swears revenge on the legendary musician, and grows up in a village devoting himself to music, while falling in love with the boatman's daughter Gauri. His quest takes him through heartbreak and wandering before he can face Tansen. Baiju Bawra is one of the great classics of Hindi cinema, made with a score by Naushad built on classical ragas, and songs such as "Man Tarpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj", "O Duniya Ke Rakhwale" and "Tu Ganga Ki Mauj", sung by Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar. At the first Filmfare Awards, Meena Kumari won Best Actress and Naushad Best Music Director.
