Majeed and Suhara grow up as neighbours in a Kerala village, squabbling and adoring each other as children. As they grow older their love deepens, but Majeed's family fortunes collapse, his relationship with his father breaks down and he leaves home to wander far away in search of a living. Years pass, and the distance between them becomes as much a matter of fate and money as of miles. The film adapts Balyakalasakhi ("childhood friend"), the much-loved 1944 novel by Vaikom Muhammad Basheer, one of the giants of Malayalam literature, which had been filmed once before in 1967. Mammootty plays Majeed across the years, with Isha Talwar as Suhara and Meena in a supporting role. It is a quiet, melancholy period drama rather than a star vehicle.
