In 1999 Jessica Lal, a young model working as a bartender at a Delhi party, was shot dead in front of hundreds of guests for refusing to serve a drink. The accused was the son of a powerful politician, and as witnesses turned hostile one by one he was acquitted. The film follows Jessica's sister Sabrina, a quiet woman who keeps fighting through years of despair, and Meera, a hard-nosed, foul-mouthed television journalist who at first ignores the story and then takes it up as a crusade. Based closely on the real case, which became a symbol of public outrage and protest in India, it is driven by Vidya Balan's restrained grief and Rani Mukerji's fiery energy, with an Amit Trivedi soundtrack that includes "Dilli".
