Viju, a stylish, wisecracking former gangster, returns to Mumbai from Paris after years away. Officially he has been hired by the underworld to eliminate ACP Karan Malhotra, an upright officer who has been tearing through the city's gangs. Unofficially, Viju has his own reasons for wanting to get close to Karan, and while the gangsters wait for him to strike he charms the neighbourhood, romances old flames and plays both sides with relish. Telugu director Puri Jagannadh built the film as a tribute to Amitabh Bachchan's angry-young-man years, and it is full of nods to his 1970s persona, his walk, his dialogue style and his songs; Bachchan himself sings on the soundtrack. The film reunites him with Hema Malini, and its title, a cheeky retort meaning 'your father may be old', became a popular catchphrase.
